I thought Mission: Impossible (the first Tom Cruise movie) was listed in Phil Teele's method book, so unless I'm mistaken, it's him on that one. I don't know about JCS.

you might have to be a bit more specific on the Jesus Christ Superstar recordiing. As you probably know this is a musical that has been made into a film twice i believe...once in 1973 and in 2000. So there would be the soundtracks of these two films, plus the numerous cast recordings available...west end, broadway, among others. So the bass bone player could be anyone.

To the best of my knowledge there is no bass trombone in any recent musical orchestrations of JCS, and i'm fairly sure it's not the 2000 movie.

But if it's a film and the soundtrack was recorded in LA, you can bet that either Phil Teele, Bill Reichenbach, or Jim Self were making their presence felt at the bottom end of the brass section. Also be aware that most soundtrack scores these days call for more than one bass trombone. And most crunchy loud pedal stuff, is more than likely to be a couple of cimbasso's or contra bass bones, either, as well....or doing most of the work.

If it's a London based soundtrack, the guys doing most of the work there, are Dave Stewart, Roger Argente, and possibly Keith McNicholl (sp). If in doubt look for the orchestral contractor in the credits. If it says Isobell Griffiths, you can be sure it was a London orchestra.

Marcel has an interesting and growing site dealing with brass players in movie soundtracks. check it out at

It's not the 2000 version that's for sure...

I'll check the details on the back of the dvd case and/or in the credits once I get it back, i'll post in when I get the results! The thing is, the music orchestration is not the same in the CD soundtrack and the DVD itself, that's why I was happily surprised (and I have the CD for a few years, and I SURE would've noticed the bass, or contra, or cimbasso or whatever instrument is played on the record)

    Have a nice day!!
