There are so many great bass trombone solo recordings - so many more than there were when I was a student only 13 years ago.

I can't say I have a favorite, but if I have to pick only one as a model for a young orchestral-style bass trombone player to emulate for sound, articulation and style, it would be Randy Hawes' Melodrama.

That said, I love many others, by Mssrs. van Dijk, Yeo, Taylor, Vernon, etc.

Where is the best place to buy bass trombone recordings?
    TAP?
Amazon doesn't seem like it has much of a selection.
    Cool,

You could check out Hickey's Music ( www.hickeys.com ). That's where I buy most of mine.

You can also get some recordings directly from the player, depending on the artist, i.e. Doug Yeo ( www.yeodoug.com ) and Ben van Dijk ( www.basstrombone.nl ).

You should check out Ben van Dijk's recommendations with links for purchase. ( http://basstrombone.nl/default.asp?subj=discography )

These music stores have many cd's for sale too:

    Ferguson Music ( www.hornguys.com )

Tap Music ( as you mentioned )

Albany Records ( http://www.albanyrecords.com/ ) has the popular Randall Hawes' Melodrama, and Eric Ewazen's Bass Hits. Bass Hits has the artists: Stefan Sanders, Charles Vernon, David Taylor and John Rojak on the same CD and is a must buy!

    Warwick Music ( http://warwickmusic.com/CDs++Books/CDs+Classical )

    Good Luck!

Charlie Vernon's CD is my favorite. What a great sound, smooth legato, controlled vibrato, and generally effortless playing! I don't tire listening to it as quickly as other brass recordings.

I very much like the cd's of "The New Trombone Collective", a Dutch bone ensemble with great players. They really are amazing.
I'm also a big Charles Vernon-fan. His smoothness and really beautiful and pure sound are fabulous.
Brandt Attema's also a fantastic bass bone player! He's so relaxed in his way of playing. He plays the trombone like it's a part of his body, he's one with his instrument. Great player !
Well, these are my favourites... Check them out and tell me if you like them.

Shurely Nana is one of the favorites. By the way: I wonder if there are any CDs with Brandt Attema as soloist?

Yes there is. On the second cd of the dutch trombone collective, Brandt plays the solo piece from Ewazen with the ensemble.
    Greetings.

"Meet Mr. Roberts" (found a copy at a thrift store for $1 and re-recorded it on CD), Randy Hawes, Charlie Vernon, and Blair Bollinger are my favorites. I also enjoy Doug Yeo, John Rojak, and Ben van Dijk's recordings.

Ooh, I agree. Probably my favorite track off of "Charles Vernon, Bass Trombone" has got to be John Williams' Bass Trombone Concerto.

Another great album is "Night School: 8 Minutes to the Loop". This is with the DePaul University's Jazz and Wind Ensembles. My favorite track on the is "Barnacle Bill, The Sailor". It requires the player to hit "double-high" A above the staff, and drop down to hit a pedal tone F. He executes it very well.

Craig Ware is also one of my favorites. His work in Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band impresses me. You can hear him best in "Hunting Wabbits", off of XXL.

Coming from a brass band background, I must say that I really really like "Proclamation" with Douglas Yeo and the Black Dyke Band.

I cannot claim that I have loads of bass trombone cds, but this is definately my favourite. Lots of nice solos of which there are so many that I would someday love to perform somewhere (probably in my broomcloset )..
