    Bass Trombonists in Movies

I was discussing with muzzy, in ray premru discography about how movies should list musicians in credits.

I discussed how I liked the bass trombone sound from the bond movie Goldeneye, and muzzy told me that it was the London Studio Session Orchestra who performed Eric Serra's score for the movie.

So, me being curious started researching trying to find out who the bass trombonist is, then with no luck on that movie, but luck with other scores, which are very well written, thought that we as bass trombonists should put together our collective memory on the bass trombone performers in movies, or the trombone section. Anything that would be of use.

I found that Roger Argente has played for the movie scores that follow:
    1. Gladiator
    2. Harry Potter
    3. Lord of the Rings
    4. James Bond (composer David Arnold, which includes: Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough, Die Another Day.) Not sure if it is for all those movies or just one, but definitely for one of those.

Any more artists you know of would be helpful to put together a discography.

The website which gave me this information is: itf2003.com/argente.htm

    Thanks for any responses

I think there is a site that lists brass players that played in various movies, but unfortunately I can't remember the URL...

Thanks, unfortunately, it only has a handful of movies. Some older ones, newer ones. Not the best movie music in my opinion, at least when you compare it to Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, and any other Hans Zimmer movie, Gettysburg, etc..

It is very difficult to get the players! I explain on the website.

The basic of the site is to put the names of the players with my personal brassheavy moviescores.
To catalog all the players ( even only trombone players) on all the movies there are is impossible to do.
I have a lot of help on non studio players and a guy who work at the local union.

Afther 6 years working on the site I have gotten much of the LA players but I have no connection with the UK studio players ( YET!!!)
The LSO have given me some information of the Star Wars recordings but non of the players I have contacted.
Even players I have listed several times on the site, I have no bio of (Vince de Rosa, Phil Teele, Bill Booth ect. ) they just don't reply........

Sure the Gladiator has some great bas/ contra trombone parts - I see what I can do!! If anyone can help me to contact studio brass players please do?!! []

You have a great site. I am just interested who the players are and I know how hard it is to find them. Thanks for your time and work on that, it is worth it. Hopefully people in the future will want to know more about the performers, afterall, that is what makes the movies.

I hope that you do not feel that I am criticizing by my second post. I should not have said some of that, I know by myself researching how hard it is to find one player for a movie rather than the whole brass section, so your work is definitely worthwhile, thanks..

I talked to Bill Reichenbach via email today. I asked him to supply me with the low brass sections of some recent movies.

I noticed that the Signs CD had the entire orchestra listed in the liner notes. I asked Bill about this, and he said that this is now in the union contract. By the way, if you like huge bass trombone sounds, the Signs score is a must! It's unbelievable what Bill and Phil Teele are laying down.

FYI - he also said that he, Phil, and Bob Sanders were the bass trombonists on Pirates of the Caribbean.

Glad to hear that the musicians are finally getting some recognition for their efforts.

I've seen signs. Wow! I know, those guys rock.

    Thanks for the information.

Forgot to mention in my earlier post.

I found it fascinating, at how far you would drive to teach. You must love music that much.

Great website redesign, one of the better bass trombone websites, along with doug's and ben's.

Cool that you played in the one o'clock at unt. I thought about trying out there for a scholarship, but I decided that I would get a little bit better and then transfer, or I could be wrong, those are only plans, plans can change, so I'll just have to wait and see.

    Hi Cody,

Thanks for the nice message. I want to add more to my personal site, but I never seem to have any time. I definitely don't want to compete with Ben and Doug, so I offer something a little different. I mean, who would want to hear my philosophies on bass trombone performance??

The San Angelo gig was definitely a tiring experience, but I did have a lot of fun and learned a lot from it. I was putting 1,000 miles on my truck every week. I had never appreciated a summer break so much.

I think your plans for college sound good. I attended UT Arlington for my undergrad after auditioning at UNT during high school. Instead of studying with a grad student, I got to take lessons from a tenured professor that had been teaching for many years. When I got to NT, it was a much more rewarding experience than if I had gone there straight out of high school. The students in Denton are extremely motivated. I learned as much by sitting next to great players as I did during lessons (not that the lessons weren't great!).

If you have any questions about NT, drop me a line. I'll be happy to help if I can.

    Take care,

    Josh

    Thanks for the kind remarks.

I think anybody would be happy to hear your philosophy on bass playing. You are a highly successful player, who went to one of the best trombone studios in the world. Why Not?

You got to give yourself credit, as long as you don't think your the god of trombone players. I don't think that will ever happen with any trombonists.

I like your website, it's nice to have something different. Ben's is different than doug's and yours is different than theirs. I was just saying that your website is one of the better one's out there. It has good features, photos, stories, etc...

You have got to give yourself credit, because young players like me want to do what you are doing later in their careers, so if you don't give yourself credit, we wouldn't want to do that.

    Keep true to yourself.

When in doubt, guess Phil Teele.

If you're talking about the Theme song, I heard that it was George Roberts. I think that the soul bossa nova was on an old Quincy Jones album right? Someone please chime in if I'm way off base here.
