On the 11th and 12th of January Ben van Dijk gave the opening class of a serie of 8 masterclasses organized by Enrique Barrachina.

The location was the "Taller de Musica Jove", in Valencia. The class was attended by 12 trombone players of different levels from students to professionals. Ben was assisted by Daniel PERPIGNAN, solo trombone of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra.

On both morings of the 11th and 12th Ben started the day with a 1 ½ hour warm up session in wich he explained his air excersizes and techinical routines. Then the group visited a local restaurant to have a nice Coffee and for some of the participants a little breakfast.

Then they returned to the school to continue with some orchestral excerpts in different settings, mostly under the direction of van Dijk who also took up his bass trombone to play with the sections in their excerpts. Verdi, Bruckner, Tschaikovsky were some of the composers tackled by van Dijk and the participants. Allthough the level was different it was of great interest for all attended.
The afternoon was made available for private lessons and ensemble playing. Ben van Dijk did the private lessons and Daniel Perpignan prepared some ensembles for the saterday evening concert. During diner time Ben van Dijk suggested the organisation to start a Spanish trombone association and this idea started to grow in the minds of his Spanish friends.
Saterday evening was the concert evening where some of the bass trombone students played solo with piano, 2 trombone quartets played some nice repertoire and Ben van Dijk played Tommy Pedersons, Blue Topaz as opener and as encore during the concert. The small concerthall of the school was filled with real afficionades of the trombone and the concerts was a succes for all.
This opening of the Masterclass series was and overall succes and people look forwards to the upcoming events with some really interesting guest teachers from Spain, Holland and England.
There was made a very nice photo compilation of the masterclass but during the flight back to Holland they were distroyed.
